Why Does My Artificial Grass Smell of Dog Urine?

If your artificial grass smells of dog urine, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common complaints we hear from pet owners.

Before we take, a deep dive in, I'd like to mention that from my experience, I have noticed that some dog breeds are more likely than others to cause lingering urine odours. In particular it's Springer Spaniels and dogs that cast a lot. Maybe it's a working dog thing?

The good news is, there are ways to significantly reduce the risk of pungent odours, when the grass system is installed properly and maintained the right way.

YOU WILL, HOWEVER HAVE AN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TASK OF KEEPING THE ODOURS AT BAY IF:-

The wrong grass is installed
The wrong sub-base is installed
Poor drainage
Sand is used in any part of the installation
The wrong weed membrane in the wrong position
Lack of proper maintenance
No use, or minimal of the modern, advanced treatments and chemicals. NB these treatments & chemicals are a wee bit complicated to use, but if the instructions are followed to a T, then amazing results are possible.

At Cutting Edge Artificial Grass, we specialise in installations that don’t trap odours and are built to drain properly. Here’s what’s really causing that unpleasant smell — and what to do about it.

No.1 — You’re Extremely Lucky to Have Dogs Using It!

Dogs using your lawn is perfectly normal — but urine on the wrong type of artificial grass system can lead to lingering smells that just won’t go away.

Many people have unfortunately been misled by marketing terms like “child and pet friendly” artificial grass.

Let’s be clear — that phrase only means it’s safe for children and pets to play on. It does not mean it’s urine odour resistant.

If you’ve been sold “pet friendly” grass without proper drainage layers or odour-control infill, that’s usually the root of the problem.

1. The Wrong Grass Type

Urine-resistant grass should have:

A PU (polyurethane) backing or ProFlow backing — not latex backed (around 97%.of grass on the market is latex backed)

Plenty of drainage holes and a fast-flowing base system underneath.

Ideally if finances allow, install a sub-layer of Zeolite directly under the grass, which naturally neutralises urine odours. Even better, again if you can afford it, you can brush in a top dressing of Envirofill or similar into the base of the grass blades. It's an expensive and tricky process, but we'll worth it in terms of anti odour performance.

2. Weed Membrane in the Wrong Place

If your installer laid weed membrane directly under the grass, that’s a disaster waiting to happen.

It traps urine just beneath the surface, holding the smell there like a sponge.

The correct setup is:

A non-woven geotextile membrane laid on the earth, below the sub-base, not directly under the grass.

This allows water and urine to drain quickly away while still preventing weeds.

It also helps prevent the sub-base from sinking into the soil over time.

3. The Wrong Sub-Base

Your sub-base is critical. It must be:

Clean, dry and low-fines (low dust content).

Free-draining — to let urine pass straight through.

You may have to AVOID these materials if you have dogs:

Sharp sand or kiln-dried sand — holds onto uric acid crystals and traps odours.

Type 1 MOT, whin dust or grano dust — can also create drainage problems if too dusty or compacted too hard. Best avoided unless you are expert on these things.

Instead, opt for a properly layered system using clean, angular drainage stone and granite chips — it allows very fast drainage and reduces the chance of smells developing.

4. Cleaning and Maintenance

Even the best-installed grass needs care.

Think of your artificial lawn like your own toilet — it needs to be flushed and cleaned regularly!

Here’s what to do:

Rinse the grass weekly or more if you can with a hose to wash away urine.

Regularly brush up the grass pile.

Use a proven enzyme or bacterial cleaner designed for artificial grass. These products break down the uric acid crystals that cause odour.

Be careful — these cleaners contain live bacteria, so never use disinfectants at the same time, or you’ll kill the good bacteria. Disinfectants tend to just mask the smell and not remove the source of it, therefore the smell is back in no time at all.

Store your cleaner away from extreme heat or cold, as both can destroy the live enzymes.

In Summary

Smelly artificial grass isn’t just about the dogs — it’s about poor installation and the wrong materials.

To prevent dog urine smells:

✅ Choose PU-backed grass or ProFlow backed grass (NOT LATEX BACKED AS MOST PEOPLE UNWITTINGLY CHOOSE) and brush up the pile regularly, it helps remove debris and dog hairs while aiding drainage

✅ Use non-woven geotextile under the sub-base, on top of the earth (not at the top) i.e. not directly under the grass

✅ Avoid sand and dusty materials

✅ Clean regularly with a good quality, proven enzyme/bacteria cleaner and consider anti odours dressings such such Zeolite, Deofill, Envirofill etc. Don't forget to brush up the grass pile regularly. Disinfectant is usually a complete waste of time.

With the right knowledge (and a proper installation), your lawn can stay fresh, clean, and low in odour — no matter how many dogs use it.

On top of the whin chips, add a mix of granodust, 6 mm drainage stone, recycled treated fine grit and Zeolite. This creates a smooth, compactable surface with excellent drainage.

6. Level & compact

Rake level and compact with a plate compactor until solid and flat.

7. Fit the artificial grass

Roll out, cut to shape, join seams, and secure edges with adhesive or pegs.

8. Brush & finish

Brush up the pile, check for low spots, and inspect drainage.

Artificial Grass Installation Guide BRIEF by Cutting Edge Grass Ayrshire

Artificial Grass QUICK/BRIEF Installation Fitting Guide

Normally (but not always) artificial grass is fitted where the original natural grass lawn was situated. The first step is to hire a turf lifter or dig out the turf manually and make a total excavation of around 75mm/100mm. Fit tanalised timber baton lengths (or composite/metal/plastic system) around the perimeter of the area to be fitted with synthetic grass (secured by stakes into the ground). Artificial grass CAN however be fitted without using a timber frame but doing so may be beyond the average DIYer. Compact the excavation with a compactor plate which can be hired from most tool hire depots. Apply a suitable weedkiller to the soil. Slope the soil downwards towards the perimeters or lowest points and then lay a semi wet mixture of postcrete and whin dust (or similar) all around the run of the edge restraints (on the inside), this should be around 100mm wide and it's purpose is to stop weeds growing up through the edges of the artificial grass and to stabilise the edges. Install a layer of weed membrane and carefully attach it to lower edges of the batons and this time spread an additional thin layer of dry postcrete/whin dust mix right into where the membrane meets the timber baton (if used) Spread around 50mm/75mm of Type 1 sub base (for ground stabilisation and drainage) and rake/spread it level, wet it and then compact it with a compactor plate. Spread around 25mm of whin dust, wet it and again level it and then compact. Make sure that the whin dust is sitting at the correct height as you will be attaching the artificial grass to the top of the batons. If you make the sub structure slightly crowned/raised in the middle it will produce a more natural effect and counter any potential future settlement. Lay a second layer of weed membrane. Now roll out and lay your already cut synthetic lawn into it's correct position (pile or dull side usually facing the house). In an ideal situation you should leave the grass lying for around 24 hours to let any creases come out. Next day attach the grass to the batons with galvanised nails or stainless steel screws and trim to the desired shape and size. Remaining creases can be dealt with by using a carpet stretcher. 6 inch galvanised nails or artificial grass pins can also be hammered into the other internal areas of the grass to help secure it down, but avoid trapping the grass blades. The nail heads should be hidden by the grass blades. We don't recommend using sand but if you decide to, you can apply kiln dried sand and brush it in until it is no longer visible on the top (this is normally done with a mechanically powered brush). The sand adds weight to the grass and helps support the grass blades in your new beautiful artificial grass lawn (with the development of new artificial grass technology it is often, no longer essential to add sand to your new artificial grass).

Finish by brushing up the pile, as the grass will come in a compact state on the roll.

The depth of the hardcore sub-base is dictated by the soil type, location, drainage etc.

We recommend that a grass designed for pets is used, which would normally be PU backed or sometimes mesh backed. Avoid the cheaper latex backed grass, if you can and best practice is to only only lay a weed membrane over the compacted earth i.e under the hardcore sub-base (not directly under the grass) to allow faster urine drain away. If you lay the membrane directly under the artificial grass it is very likely to pool and cause odours. The Type 1 and whin dust should be substituted by limestone chippings and then 6mm drainage stone to allow fast drain away.

Don't get caught out with pungent, dog urine odour in your new artificial grass installation,

Does your installer know how to avoid or reduce the likelihood of this?

A question that we are often asked is " what is the ideal grass for dog owners?" We find this question asked more often when we are asked to quote for supplying and fitting astroturf in Ayrshire. Typically most artificial grass for sale is made of a latex backing and these grasses are usually priced lower than PU backed grasses. In our area in particular, North Ayrshire in Scotland, we find that most local landscaping companies tend to fit latex backed artificial grass at thickness of between 30mm and 40mm to very near 100% of supply and fitting jobs. What is the reason for that, I hear you ask? Well in our opinion, it could be a few reasons, perhaps the lower buying price, easy to get a hold of or maybe naivety on what is the best synthetic grass for the intended purpose. So what is the best grass for dog owners? In short a durable, hard wearing medium or short piled grass with a PU backing (polyurethane), typically between 25mm and 35mm thickness. Most grasses on the market are latex backed and nearly all of them are classed as pet friendly, but pet friendly latex grass just means that the urine won't stain the grass and it is also free from harmful elements such as lead, cadmium and zinc, so it won't harm your dog, but it is not dog urine odour friendly, contrary to what many people think. A PU backing is however the ideal solution, simply because it holds the grass blades more securely, meaning less blades are shed and it will not absorb the urine and faeces odours. PU backed synthetic grass is basically non absorbent with drainage holes which allows the fast and free draining of water/urine etc. On the other hand the cheaper more common latex backed fake grasses will absorb and hold moisture at the surface, thus holding bad odours at the top of the grass. In the colder months this might not be so noticeable, but in the warm summer days the stench of dog urine and faeces can be overwhelming. If your budget allows, PU backed grass is the way to go for dog owners. In addition to choosing a suitable for purpose grass, it is equally important to prepare your new artificial grass installation in such a way that it allows the urine etc to flow quickly away through the sub-base and away from the surface, again to minimise the chance of odours. This is normally achieved by excavating deeper into the soil, ideally at least 100mm down or even deeper if time and finances allow. Instead of using the usual cheap weed membrane, use non woven geotextile membrane laid directly over the excavation earth and NOT directly under the artificial grass or it will hold the dog urine odours.

Non woven geotextile membrane (usually white in colour) is preferred because it is faster draining, helps stop the sub-base sinking into the earth and protects against weed growth. The sub-base for dog areas is often totally different from standard installations. instead of the usual Type 1 bottom layer, a thick layer of P-flow stone chippings is much better, as there are minimal fines/dust in it The fines and dusts in Type 1 are not ideal as they will slow down the drainage and restrict the urine flow away. A top layer of 6mm P-flow drainage stone is much preferred to sand or whin/grano dust, both of which restrict the drainage too.

Modern anti odour additives

These days, there are a range of products on the market, that are efficient at reducing or even eliminating dog urine odours. If installed correctly products such as Zeolite and Envirofill do an amazing job. Good quality enzyme/bacteria cleaners are also amazing.

In summary use a hard wearing short to medium pile grass with a good PU backing, excavate the area as deep as possible and lay the non woven geotextile membrane directly on top of the soil, well below the artificial grass to prevent pooling of water/urine etc. Use P-flow stone chippings and 6mm P-flow drainage stone for rapid drainage. Never use sand in any part of the dog area installation because it will hold the dog urine odour which will be almost impossible to remove. If finances allow, add the long lasting anti odour sub-fills and top fill dressings.
