Not as simple as you may think!

How to Attach Artificial Grass to Concrete – Expert Tips from Cutting Edge Artificial Grass

Installing artificial grass on concrete can completely transform dull patios, yards, or driveways into soft, vibrant, low-maintenance outdoor spaces. But for your synthetic lawn to last, getting the fixing method right is crucial.

At Cutting Edge Artificial Grass, we’ve installed hundreds of artificial lawns across Ayrshire and Glasgow’s Southside, and here’s our step-by-step guide to achieving a rock-solid bond.

1. Surface Preparation is Everything

For artificial grass to adhere properly to concrete, preparation is key.

Concrete must be clean, dry, and well-keyed. Start by inspecting the area — remove any moss, loose debris, or old adhesive.

Then, use a grinder to create deep slashes or score marks across the concrete surface. These grooves help the adhesive flow into the concrete and grip firmly. The more thorough you are with this step, the better the long-term hold will be.

2. Remove Dust and Debris

Once scored, blow out all the dust using a powerful blower. Any fine dust left behind will weaken the bond. The goal is a clean, textured surface that allows the glue to penetrate deeply.

3. Heat the Adhesive for Better Flow

Before applying the adhesive, it’s a smart trick to slightly heat it — this improves its viscosity (flowability), allowing it to seep into the scored key lines you’ve created.

Spread the adhesive evenly and work efficiently before it begins to cure.

4. Fixing with Mechanical Fasteners (Alternative Method)

If adhesive isn’t ideal for your project — for example, in areas with poor drainage or heavy temperature swings — another method is to mechanically fix the grass.

Using an SDS drill, carefully drill through the grass backing and into the concrete below. Take great care not to catch the artificial grass blades, as this can cause damage.

Once drilled, insert specialist hammer-type fixings and give them a final tighten with a power driver.

Done correctly, this results in a solid, permanent installation that’s built to last.

5. The Result – A Rock-Solid, Seamless Finish

Although attaching artificial grass to concrete is a time-consuming process, when done properly, it creates a finish that’s solid as a rock, visually seamless, and requires only minimal maintenance.
